Episode 23: Against the Grain – Satan’s Whiskers

Episode #23 had us trying Satan’s Whiskers.  This drink has no history as far as I can tell.  The recipe was first noted in 1930, but I was unable to find any background on it whatsoever.

The traditional recipe is as follows:

  • 1/2 oz. gin
  • 1/2 oz. curacao
  • 1/2 oz. sweet vermouth
  • 1/2 oz. dry vermouth
  • 1/2 oz. orange juice
  • Dash orange bitters

This is an orange drink.  It can be had “straight” with Grand Marnier or “curled” as we had it with curacao.

This was another of those beautiful little cocktails that blends perfect flavors resulting in a deliciously unexpected mixture.  The only thing it lacks is a good solid history that tells us why this drink is named after one of the most provocative characters of that century and what it has to do with his stubble.  Bobby gives us a suggestion.  It’s as good as any; I even like it.  But it’s just not satisfying if there isn’t a good Wiki on it.
